 Job search

This blog is written to provide general and basic information about job search in Germany. Things are different in Germany when compared to other countries, these job consultancies are referred sometimes as Arbeitsvermittlers, Personalvermittler and Personaldienstleister. Most of the effort has to be from the applicant, the best way I found to reach them is to attend the Job fairs or through professional networking sites (LinkedIn,  Xing etc.).

This blog is divided in to two parts where first part is about

  1. Arbeits Agentur (and/or Job center) and
  2. Job searching portals

Part 1: -  Arbeits Agentur (Job center)

First important thing to do is to register with Arbeitsagentur which will help you to find jobs and share your CV /Resume (Lebenslauf) with different consultancies they work with and publish your profile. Here is the link: https://www.arbeitsagentur.de/. They will forward you job offers and some helpful information to search jobs.

If you are working in Germany and contributed towards statuatory pension for atleast 1 year, you are eligible for unemployment benefits. The following steps are to be followed:

  1. Create an user profile, it can be done in person at Arbeitsagentur or do it online through (https://www.arbeitsagentur.de/).
    1. If you go to Arbeitsagentur personally, please carry CV/ Resume, Certificates and other important documents for verification purpose. One can also register as Arbeitssuchend at the same time.
    2. If you create a profile online, a password will be sent to your home which needs to be entered to activate your profile. Later their customer care executive will call you to cross check all your details.
      • Go to the website --> Click Meine eServices ->  Scroll down (Under Noch nicht registriert?) -> Registrieren als Person -> Registrieren -> Accept Terms & conditions -> Weiter --> Select an Username and password -> weiter ohne Personalausweiss (if you are not a German national) -> Enter personal Details -> weiter-> Add address & personal details-> complete rest of the details in next pages->A pin will be sent home -> Activate your account
      • In case if you are on a job seeker visa or a student about to finish /finished your studies in Germany, this procedure will allow you to search for jobs here matching your profile and also make your profile visible to job consultants and
    3. TIP: If you are not fluent in German, better do it in person at their office in your city.
    4. Registering as Unemployed person and avail unemployment benefits is a two step procedure:
      1. Arbeitsuchend melden (atleast 3 months before last working day)
      2. Arbeitlos melden ( can be done as earlier as 3 months)

  1. Arbeitsuchend melden (Register as a jobseeker): Job seeker applicaiton has to be sent atleast 3 months before your last working day to avail unemployment benifits and insurance right from the first day of not having a job. This doesnt't guarantee you a unemployment benefits untill you apply for Arbeitlos separately. If you find another job in the mean time inform job centre.
    •  Go to the website --> Click Meine eServices ->  Login -> Registrieren als Person -> Registrieren -> Accept Terms & conditions -> Weiter --> Select an Username and password eServices Vermittlung und Beratung
    • Checklist is job seeker registration is here

  2.  Arbeitlosmelden (Claim unemployment benefits): It is possible to apply for Arbeitlos earliest 3 months in advance till first unemployment day. It is very important to register on time to avail unemployment benefits without any delay.
    1. If you want to do it in person, it can be done at the local job centre office. Expect waiting time at the office if you are walking in without an appointment, in some cities it is necessary to have an appointment. Call their customer care to verify
    2. One can do it using their website.  Apply for it in advance, as Job searching pers (jobsuchend) 3 months in advance and as Job less (arbeitslösend) atleast before last working day. A detailed procedure is mentioned on their website.
***UPDATE*** Website is also avaible in English and French LANGUAGES AS WELL***
