This is prepared to help Indians give an idea on what to carry while going to Germany / Europe for the first time.

Clothes:

  • 5 to 6 jeans
  • 8 to 9 T-Shirts
  • About 2 - 3 sweat shirts (for winter)
  • 2 to 3 Bermudas/boxers for night dress
  • 1 to 2 thermal clothing (you may want to buy from here – it’s the same)
  • 2-3 towels (no need to get hand kerchiefs, u wont sweat here)

  • 2-3 pairs of formal wear
  • One pair of formal shoes, one pair of sport shoes, Chappals/slippers
  • 2 Bed sheets
  • Leather/Informal belt
  • Don’t get jackets from india because you will have to buy one thick winter coat here. Those from India do not help in the winter, if u want u can get jeans jacket for the transition period. Waterproof jacket might be handy depending on the season you are coming.
  • A pair of gloves and maybe a winter cap, don’t get monkey cap

Utensils:

Get only non-stick and flat bottomed utensils (here we have electric stoves so steel utensils do not work )
  • Spoons-3, Knives-1, Peeler-1 ……..
  • Some spices: Turmeric-1/2kg, Dhania powder, Chili powder-2kgs (depends on how much u need), other masalas-1kg (Sambhar masala, etc.)I suggest u to better leave this section to ur mom.
  • Pickles 2 or 3 types each 2 kgs
  • Pressure cooker (you get them here but they are expensive so its better to get one). Get some extra gaskets, valves etc for replacement. However these days one can buy pressure cooker (Schnellkochtopf) in local stores and online but they are expensive compared to Indian ones. Choice is yours.

Medicines:

  • Get common medicines for cold, cough, fever, flu, indigestion, diarrhea, painkiller, tooth ache, muscle/sprains, etc. May be a few antibiotics.
  • Remember to get prescription for all the medicine you carry. You should know which medicine you usually require – so get appropriate medicine. Usually nobody falls ill here, so do not worry but this is just precautionary.
  • Cotton bandages...
  • Prescription from doctor (very important don’t forget)

 Stationary:

  • Pens (if you have any preference)
  • Pencils-5, erasers -3
  • Markers

  • Grinder (if luggage permits) if required. These days one can also get portable ones. They are also available here in local asian stores but expensive.
  • You can get them if you already have one. All electronic goods from India work in Germany but make sure you carry the converter.

Money:
  • Make sure to carry enough money for a one to two months of your expences, depending on your situation.
  • This includes 1 month rent + Caution (vary from 1 to 3 months)
  • Student fee (250 to 500€) if not paid already, some Universities charge fee for non EU students, check with them once
  • Activate your Indian Bank ATM card and ask them if they partner with any bank in Germany. ICICI bank cards can be used to withdraw money from Deutsche Bank ATM's without any service charge. This is one of the most economical ways to convert money.

These are all that I could think of , a few things could be missing... Adjust them according to the baggage allowance and your priority.

**This list is prepared by keeping students in mind so some of them are not applicable to others**
